The Astonishing > My Last Farewell

I am going to take a few minutes here, and over the next few weeks, to review Dream Theater’s new album, The Astonishing. IMO, this is a epic, massive and awe inspiring album. Clocking in at ~2h:10m, it’s gonna take a while.

The 8th track of ACT II is My Last Farewell. Another track that I think serves itself incredibly well. The textures and rapid changes of the song are true prog. I specifically love the ending with Gabriel’s reaction to the situation, how the music is. They really do a fantastic job of properly setting the context and details of the story with the signature of their sound.

Addition note, much like my feelings about The Path That Divides, this has been moving up the charts because of the way it moves. The way it grooves. I can surmise what’s going on based on the sound, pace and texture.
