I am going to take a few minutes here, and over the next few weeks, to review Dream Theater’s new album, The Astonishing. IMO, this is a epic, massive and awe inspiring album. Clocking in at ~2h:10m, it’s gonna take a while.
The third track, The Gift of Music, was actually a pre-release that Dream Theater put out to the masses on December 4th, 2015. This is a humdinger. While “only” 4:07, it really does what it’s supposed, set the tone.
My thoughts … This is the best track on the album. I’ve listened to The Astonishing a good 15 times now (I have nothing else I’d want to listen to) and this is still the best track. There are a few that come close, but this is just fantastic.
What makes it so fantastic? Well, simply put it has everything prog that you’d want plus some great tones. The chorus that starts at 1:50 is amazing. The background with a choir, the piano, the tone and pace. Man, its killer. And the fact it drops into a series of solos, it makes me implode with a sense of … “YES !!! YES !!! YES!!!”. That good.
And now, without further blabbering, bring on the best track on this massive album, Mr. #3.
