The Astonishing > Three Days

I am going to take a few minutes here, and over the next few weeks, to review Dream Theater’s new album, The Astonishing. IMO, this is a epic, massive and awe inspiring album. Clocking in at ~2h:10m, it’s gonna take a while.

We are now up to the tenth track, Three Days. This is one of my most favorite tracks on the album. If not for “A Savior In The Square”, “The Gift Of Music” (of the tracks so far) this would be my #1. It’s special, musically and melodically.

The song revolves around Lord Nafaryus not wanting to, or being able to, tolerate that Gabriel’s power over the people with his gift of music. This really pisses Lord Nafaryus off and he lays down the smack down. He gives the people of Ravenskill 3 days to produce the savior, or he’ll come there with his army and just take him. It’s a typical threat system.

The harmony of this song, it’s beyond words. The laughing by Lord Nafaryus is so damn fun and funny it borders on absurd. Another thing to note on this track is the use of some unorthodox music, like ragtime styles. It’s insane.
