This 2002 Subaru WRX Wagon started off as my ex-wife’s car, albeit an automatic. The WRX automatic, back then, was a bit … craptacular.
But it was a nice, solid, and useful little wagon—serviceable, reliable, and fun.
When I got my 2005 Subaru Legacy GT, well… I had that Legacy for a day before my ex-wife demanded (nicely, of course) that it was to be hers. And I got the wagon. Automatic Wagon. Oh, joy!
I called my local shop that day, the one who had done all of the GOOD work on my Subaru’s, and said, “Can you do a 5spd swap from the Impreza RS into the WRX?”
His reply was simple, “Absolutely. Bring the WRX down, and we’ll start right away.”
Over time, this went from Automatic to 5spd Manual to 6spd Manual and back to a 5spd when I sold it. I’m glad I was able to do that then, but in retrospect, I should have considered this when buying the Legacy GT.
