WASHINGTON — Arizona’s delegates to this summer’s Republican National Convention are free to vote as they choose if no presidential candidate earns enough delegates to win the GOP nomination on the first ballot.
That provision, which is state law, could come into play this year as opponents of GOP front-runner Donald Trump attempt to block his path to the nomination.
Trump or one of the other candidates – Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida and Ohio Gov. John Kasich – needs 1,237 delegates, with 58 delegates going to the winner of the Arizona presidential preference election on March 22.
